Our system-checker can determine whether you
have the software and hardware installed on your computer
to watch and listen to video and audio. If you have Windows
Media Player installed, you will be given the option to run
a firewall check, to ensure your network will allow you to
stream. Where a problem is encountered you will be given the
option to either install the player, or follow links to find
out why you cannot hear the audio test-file.
Players. In order to listen
to/view streaming media, firstly you require a 'player' installed
on your computer. Most computers have either one or all the
main players already installed - Real
Player or Windows
Media Player.
When you are given links to streaming media, you will be told
which of the above formats the stream is sent in, and often
given the option to choose between one or more formats. You
will therefore need to know which, if any, players are installed
on your computer. You will then be able to decide which format
stream to choose, or whether you need to download one of the
free players that are available for each format.
Note: Certain webcasts may be affected
by users of WMP version 9, as the default settings can interfere
with certain streaming presentations. If you have WMP 9 and
experience difficulties (e.g. slide changes), goto Tools;
Options; Security, and check the "Run script commands
when present" box. (Do not check the second option underneath).
Hardware. To listen to audio, you need to have a sound
card installed in your PC. Most PCs will have a basic sound
card installed, which should be sufficient, provided you have
either speakers, or a set of headphones attached in order
to hear the audio. Similarly, for video your PC requires a
video card installed. Most PCs will have a functional video
card already installed.
Firewalls. Once you know you have the software installed
on your computer to view a stream, you need to ensure that
you are not protected behind a firewall. If you are part of
a Corporate Network, it is quite possible that you may need
to make some adjustments to you settings in order to allow
a stream through to your PC.
In certain cases, you may have to contact your Network Administrator
so that they can configure the network to allow you to view
streaming media.
