Speaking at the Sport on Mobile TV conference
in London today, Servecast founder, Kevin Quinn
said "Short video clips are key in order
to overcome device limitations and technology
shortcomings and to deliver an acceptable end-user
experience." Servecast is Europe's leading
sports webcasting company with high profile clients
such as FC Barcelona, Sky Sports, Liverpool FC,
Man Utd and Setanta Sports. Kevin advises sport
organizations on how best to deliver high quality
audiovisual sports content over broadband and
mobile applications.
The 'Sport on Mobile TV' event brought together
a selection of key industry professionals to predict
the future of mobile media technologies. It examined
the user experience to highlight likely differences
in take-up and user preferences. It also looked
at the advertising and sponsorship of Mobile TV
content.
Kevin participated on the panel entitled 'Show
me the Money: Perfecting the product offering
and business model for sport on mobile TV'. During
this panel discussion, speakers compared different
business models for sport on mobile TV. Speaking
at the conference today, Kevin said "Mobile
TV is another story. Before it's ready for primetime,
operators and rights holders have to deal on the
basis of fact rather than hype. It is essential
that there is insight into what customers want
and are willing to pay for. There is no point
making long sports programmes available over mobile
if end users are not going to pay to watch them.
Short clips with compelling content such as match
highlights or best goals is the type of content
that will be enjoyed by a mobile user." In
Kevin's view "a mobile service must deliver
the content users need, immediately and on their
terms."
While there is no doubt that the mobile is a ubiquitous
medium which provides an opportunity to reach
sports fans on the move, day or night, it is clear
that the content needs to be of very high quality
and consumable in bite sizes if end users are
going to pay.
The important role of the personalisation of mobile
data in order to drive take up was clearly articulated
by Kieran Mahon, Head of Media from Vodafone who
also participated on the panel. He clearly sees
sport as the most compelling content to distribute
over mobile. He outlined that recent developments
in mobile data delivery means that mobile sports
content can be consumed easily "Personalisation
of mobile content has improved usability by learning
about users' mobile content preferences, dynamically
building the user a personalised menu and reducing
the time and clicks to services." For a sports
fan using their mobile to access sports content,
this means the link to their favourite sports
content will be top of the menu on their mobile
phone. Kieran also emphasised that an understanding
of personalisation, automatic content recommendation
and mobile search in a wireless environment is
key to enabling the success of mobile portal content
propositions.
The delegation included major rights holders and
broadcasters, sport federations, sports lawyers
such as BSkyB UKl MTV BBC Outside Broadcasts MTG
New Media Denmark SPORTFIVE and Sony.
