Network limitations are no longer an obstacle
for online Internal TV heard the attendees at
the Servecast & BroadView hosted seminar,
'Building The Business
Case For Internal TV' which took place in
the ITV centre on London's South Bank on Wednesday,
April 12th. Together Servecast and BroadView presented
case studies on how to effectively produce video
content for internal communications and how to
implement video over the Intranet without impacting
on the corporate network. The seminar saw representatives
from large multinationals such as Unilever, HBOS
and BP gathered together to discuss the best strategies
and implementation techniques for Internal TV
from content production to corporate webcasting.
Speaking at the Seminar was Darach Deehan, CEO
of Servecast and the Managing Director of BroadView,
Stuart Maister. Chairing the conference was communication
specialist Volker Buscher from Arup Consulting
who has in-depth knowledge of communications technology
and its influence on business performance.
The seminar examined the future of corporate communications
and provided an in-depth insight into the types
of content large organisations should be producing
for effective Internal TV and how to tackle the
technical issues which often get in the way of
implementing online audio visual communications.
Explaining how to deliver a web based Internal
TV solution without negatively impacting on the
network Darach Deehan, CEO of Servecast said "It
is possible to deliver on demand video content
even with limited network capacity by allowing
large organisations to control the use of video
within the organisation such that large numbers
of employees watching video content will not negatively
impact on applications that rely on the same bandwidth
such as e-mail and internet access." Servecast's
Enterprise Media Studio solution allows an organisation
to set limits on the number of people or 'concurrent
audience' that can watch video from one location.
Using its worldwide implementation with Vodafone
as an example, Darach explained how Vodafone have
successfully rolled out Vodafone TV across 26
countries and 65,000 employees. Vodafone TV is
an online company portal which provides real time
company news and updates via video and web articles
and enables engagement with staff through interactive
polls and surveys. It has been a great success
since its launch in November 2004 and has been
very well received by its global staff due to
its interesting & innovative content and interactive
nature.
Speaking at the conference, Stuart Maister, Managing
Director of BroadView said "The drivers of
web based Internal TV are the domain of communication
and HR leaders. Well planned and delivered Internal
TV means that employees can quickly and easily
see and hear their leaders, peers and customers;
view reports of best practice, company developments
or new products; engage in interactive programs
removing distance and dispersion as issue and
benefit from on demand training and induction."
Describing the best way to implement a web based
Internal TV solution Stuart said that "The
three key areas to address are content, delivery
and access. The content strategy is key and should
be the driving force. Once content is produced,
enabling quick or instant delivery of company
news and updates to staff and wider audiences
that can immediately access this information whether
at work or traveling is vital."
Describing the type of content to ensure effective
communication Stuart said "The key is that
most or all of Internal TV content will be available
on demand at a time and place which suits the
viewer. It should be in bite size modules linked
to other relevant content, both video and non-video.
The TV service should be part of the overall engagement
strategy, not set apart from it."
Darach Deehan also explained how to effectively
track, measure and monitor interactive functionality
through detailed reporting. It is vital that Communications
Managers can measure direct and indirect aspects
of audience participation to analyse the return
on investment of such a communications initiative.
Indirect statistics such as usage reports, time
of viewing and length of viewing and a range of
direct reports such as audience polls, feedback
forms and surveys are key to assist Communications
departments shape and drive successful Internal
TV communications strategies.
