Servecast, the leading webcasting company, in
conjunction with Eircom, IBM and Business in the
Community (BitC) delivered the 'Science in Action'
webcast to secondary & primary schools throughout
Ireland. Minister for Education, Mary Hanafin
TD opened the seminar on Wednesday, October 4th
where leading professionals from Corporations,
Research and Educational establishments across
Ireland explained the benefits and opportunities
of a career in science. The webcast was delivered
live through www.science4now.ie and the presentations
will remain available as on-line video archives
for the next 6 months. This was the first time
that all schools in Ireland have been given the
opportunity to participate, via webcast, in a
seminar by industry which promotes future career
options in science. The event was a huge success
with 45 Schools pre-registered representing approximately
1680 students.
Following an opening address from Minister Hanafin,
there were inspirational speeches and presentations
by speakers from: Cork Cancer Research Centre,
IBM, DePuy, Science Foundation Ireland, Intel,
élan, Glanbia, Centocor and Johnson &
Johnson Medical. Students and teachers viewing
the webcast were able to provide feedback on their
viewing experience and take part in a number of
polls that were carried out interactively, online.
60% of the student audience that responded to
the survey believed that the information provided
influenced them in a positive way towards considering
a career in Science & Technology. In addition
75% said that they would definitely watch a webcast
by industry, for schools, to promote career options
again in the future.
The webcast delivery and online interactive features
were enabled by Servecast's Enterprise Media Studio.
Servecast's pioneering software and video-delivery
solutions enable organisations to harness the
power of webcasting as part of their communications,
training and investor relations activities. Enterprise
Media Studio is a unique communications
and training platform, which enables organisations
to create, manage, deliver and measure compelling
and interactive multimedia internal and external
communications materials.
Ms Susan O' Grady, coordinator of Science in
Action commented "We want to ensure that
students, teachers and parents are aware of the
careers that are available in science-based companies
at present, but more importantly, in five and
ten years time. "
Niall Feely, Director of Business Markets, Eircom,
said "Eircom is delighted to bring students
closer to science and the career opportunities
that science offers. The webcast is an exciting
and innovative way to reach students throughout
the country."
